History of Constanza

Before the arrival of the Spanish, the Constanza Valley was inhabited by the Taíno people, who took advantage of the fertility of its lands and the abundance of water.

The origin of the name “Constanza” has several historical theories, with the most well-known linking it to an indigenous princess.

During the 20th century, agriculture completely transformed the local economy. Thanks to its temperate climate, products uncommon in the Caribbean began to be cultivated, such as strawberries, experimental apples, potatoes, carrots, garlic, cabbage, lettuce, and a wide variety of flowers.

Today, Constanza is considered the country’s main cold-climate agricultural region and one of the most important ecotourism destinations in the Dominican Republic.
