History of Puerto Plata

Puerto Plata has one of the most fascinating histories in the Dominican Republic.

Christopher Columbus arrived on these shores during his first voyage in 1492 and was impressed by the silvery glow reflected by Mount Isabel de Torres at sunrise. For this reason, he named the area Puerto Plata.
